Since the ancient times India had trade relations with the rest of the world. It's textiles and spices were seen as luxuries in the different civilizations of that time. Ships full of gold and silver used to come to the Indian ports from Ancient Rome and Greece. This gold was used to pay for the items of clothing and spices which were greatly revered there. Because of the abundance of gold in the country India was affectionately called the golden sparrow.
The main purpose of the Britishers to come to India was to establish trade relations with the country. The East India Company(EIC) was primarily a commercial enterprise and it aimed to create a monopoly in England with regard to the trade in Indian goods.
Why did this trading corporation end up being political?
The East India Company at first restricted itself to the economic front by just claiming preferential farmans (royal orders) from the rulers to get exemption from taxes and other favours.
Afterwards the company changed its style of working and started getting more involved in the politics of the rulers. This happened due to the following reasons-
The French East India company had also come to India with the objectives of increasing trade, this disrupted the superiorty of the English East India company as a single buyer of Indian goods and presented an unwanted competition. So the company thought that by taking over the various Indian states they would be able to oust any form of competition.
The Indian rulers were becoming a problem for the East India company as they had started to revoke the tax and other benefits provided to the EIC.
There was a balance of payments problem, as the traders had to pay for the items bought from India in gold. The Britishers realised if they took control of the country they could pay for the goods by the taxes that they earned from the people of India.
Also, after the Britishers had established their rule in India, the Industrial revolution happened. Having India as a colony was a great advantage for the English as they could buy cheap raw material from India and also make India into a marker for their industrial goods.
All this made India very profitable for the Britishers and that's why they weren't ready to give India it's independence easily.
