why do we need red blood cells? what would be the problem if hemoglobin was free moving in blood to carry oxygen?

Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen. Red blood cells also remove carbon dioxide from your body, transporting it to the lungs for you to exhale.

I know it, but wouldn't it be enough it there were no red blood cells to hold hemoglobin? hemoglobin could be in plasma, why does it need red blood cells?
