When ethanol is heated in the presence of acidified potassium dichromate, the orange dichromate is reduced to green solution of Chromium(III) ions. This  reaction is an oxidation reaction and acidified potassium dichromate oxidizes ethanol to ethanoic acid.

This reaction  may as well be used to produce ethanal which is an aldehide only when the product is distilled immediately as it forms. But when distillation is not done, further oxidation takes place to produce ethanoic acid

Ethanol is oxidised to ethanoic acid with the help of acidified K2Cr2O7.

C2H5OH + 2O → CH3COOH + H2O
