The guard cells actually helps in controlling the opening and closing of the stomatal aperture i.e the stomatal pore. If water flows through the guard cells then they become turgid and bulge out ,thus opening the stomatal pore in order to allow diffusion of gases or transpiration. Hope that the answer helps you :)
