PRE-HEAT STARTING, HOT CATHODE:
1. The Original fluorescent lamp design.
2. Uses a separate starter in its circuit; needs to be pre-heated.
3. Uses a Ballast that needs high voltage.
HOT-CATHODE, RAPID-START:
1. Same as pre-heat lamps; differs only from the circuit.
2. Doesn't need an external starter.
3. Specifically used for outdoor sign lighting, streetlights and merchandise display.
INSTANT-STARTING HOT CATHODE:
1. Also called the Slim Lamp; considered the best among the varieties of instant fluorescent lamps.
2. Only has 1 pin that acts as a switch that breaks the ballast circuit when the tube is removed.
3. This type of lamp is hot cathode, instant start lamp, which different from the high voltage cold cathode type. In comparison, this type of lamp is more expensive and more efficient than the rapid type. However, it has much lower ambient temperature that the rapid start circuit.
COLD CATHODE:
1. Requires high voltage.
2. Needs a special high voltage transformer during operation.
3. The Neon and mercury lamps are classified under the cold cathode lamps.
