A tropism is a response that an organism makes to a stimulus. An example of a common tropism in plants is phototropism (or light response). Plants grow towards light sources, and if the direction of light is changed, the plant will also change its direction of growth to accommodate for survival.

The response of the plant towards or away from the stimulus is called as tropism. there are a 5 types of tropism a plant can respond to. they are: i)phototropism (where stimulus is sunlight): eg: the stem of the plant moves towards the sunlight where are the roots move away from this stimulus.
ii)hydrotropism (where stimulus is water): the root of a plant spread deep in the earth in search of water.
iii)thigmotropism (where stimulus is touch): mimosa plant folds up its leaves almost quickly after we touch it.
iv)geotropism (where stimulus is gravity): the roots move in the direction of the gravity whereas the stem of the same plant moves away from the gravity.
v)chemotropism (where stimulus are chemicals): movement can be seen during the growth of the pollen tube, where growth is always towards the ovules.
