There are various variables use in research. The following are the most used ones. Usually, the most essential ones are the independentanddependentvariables as well as controlled, extraneous, interveningandmoderator.
Independent variable is a variable manipulated by the researcher to cause an effect.
Dependent variable is a variable influenced by the changes in independent variable. It is the response or the effect.
Discrete variable is a variable that can be counted and is finite but cannot be measured. Examples are the number of watches sold per day and the number of mosquito bites.
Continuous variable is a variable that can be measured and is infinite because the value contains within a range. Examples are height and weight.
Controlled variable is a variable that is held constant or unchanged throughout the investigation.
Extraneous variable is a variable that is not an independent variable but can affect the dependent variable if not controlled.
Others are intervening variable and moderator variable. The former is a variable that links the variables (e.g. IV and DV) though not observable while the latter is a variable that affects the relationship between IV and DV thru modifying the effects of the intervening variable.
