I am personally not close with my relatives addicted to alcohol or smoking, but we took this as a thesis in college. In most of our interviews, they said they can't stop because it's something as part of their routine already. And if they were to stop it, this routine must be replaced into something else. Like for example instead of smoking after eating they eat candies or sweets. Like something to divert their attention to. It's not easy but if they really want to, this is an effective method.
