Brief Introduction

You have learned in Science 7 the wonder of the process of how we perceived sound

through our very own detector – the ear. This is possible because we have learned that sound
can travel through different media. But why is it that during fireworks display, you will hear a
delayed sound? This is also observable when lightning strikes, the thunder is heard at
a
considerable amount of time? Does the speed of sound in air varies? What factors greatly affect

the speed of sound in air?

Let’s Recall

Directions: Consider the following list of different media of sound, rank them from a medium in

which sound would travel fastest to a medium in which sound would travel the slowest.

Air at 00C
Iron
Wood
Air at 200C
Water
