The victims were students of the government Thambalnu Higher Secondary school located at Yairipok in Imphal East, a police source said, adding that students, teachers and staff of the school were moving to the Leimatak area in Bishnupur district for an annual excursion of the school in two buses.
The driver of the ill-fated bus lost control and the vehicle turned turtle around 10.30am, local sources said, adding that five students died on the spot and the other five succumbed on the way to hospitals in Imphal. Police have registered a case to ascertain the cause of the major mishap.
Following the incident, the state government has put a ban on organizing school excursions with immediate effect..
An office memorandum issued by the school's education director, L Nandakumar Singh on Wednesday evening asked all heads of government, government-aided and private schools to comply with the order.
Chief minister N Biren Singh, who visited the injured in various hospitals in Imphal announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, one lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who sustained minor injuries.
