They use Echolocations to produce sound waves to locate objects that are far or invisible to them when dark especially bats who are in dark caves needs this to avoid bumping into objects
How does it work? Take for example a Car. Some Cars have a proximity sensors or parking sensors, this is used to sense walls that could potentially get hit by the car and this alerts the driver if it is near a wall that he cannot see inside his car or rear mirrors
