Handcrafted products are expensive because of a very important reason and that is they are handmade. It takes more time to make them. Machines are used for mass production and can possibly make hundreds of pieces in the time a craftsman finishes one product.
Why are products, which are made by hand, more expensive than other products made by machines?
Why do handmade items cost so much?
HandMade. That’s why.
NOT produces en mass by machines.
Created from someone’s imagination, or duplicated one at a time.
This requires time and effort and (usually) a specific level of expertise. For example, unless you know how to quilt, making one would require you to learn how to sew, source materials, cut them into the desired pattern, and assemble them in a pleasing fashion. Some hand stitched quilts - NOT sewn on a machine, but each piece sewn together with a needle and thread - can take Years to make.
I personally can crochet a hat in about 4 hours (given that I have nothing else to do). If I work on it for 4 hours, using one skein of acrylic yarn (not wool, cotton or more expensive yarns), and I charge minimum wage (approx $7/hour), the LEAST I can charge for it and break even is $35. Why would you expect to spend less than $20 for the hat? My time and expertise are worth more than you think, Especially if You cannot do it yourself.
I’m not trying to be confrontational, but if you are an IT professional, would you charge $10/hour to fix someone’s computer? The time and money you put into obtaining the expertise/certifications are worth compensation. Most of the shops I know charge a MINIMUM of $50/hour - and that’s after a $25 evaluation fee for just looking at it. Their expertise means paying their price for something I cannot do.
