We often hear about the dangers of obesity, but we hear less frequently about the risks of eating disorders. Eating disorders may seem benign, but this is a myth. Every 62 minutes someone dies as a direct result of an eating disorder.1
Early intervention markedly improves treatment outcome, which is one reason to ensure individuals with eating disorders receive a prompt diagnosis and access to treatment, preferably evidenced-based wherever possible.
Eating disorders cause a number of medical problems. No system of the body is immune to the effects of malnutrition. As for causes of death, suicide and cardiovascular complications top the list.
People with eating disorders often don’t get the nutrients their bodies need to stay healthy and work properly. For example, people with eating disorders are at risk of heart or kidney failure leading to death if they are not treated.
