Following our Lenten reflection, this weekend, I want to call our attention to Moses. He was chosen by God to liberate the Israelites from slavery, and bring redemption to His people. While Abraham is recognized as the “Father of the Faithful,” Moses is recognized as the Liberator of the Israelites from Egypt who led the people through the desert.
Moses, the LiberatorJacob’s son, came into the land of Egypt and became so numerous and so strong that the land was filled with them. Later, a new Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, was concern that the Israelites were growing in number and was afraid. As a result, the Israelites became slaves in the land of Egypt. Moses was born in this context. He was saved by Pharaoh’s daughter, and was raised as an Egyptian. Years later, Moses witnessed how an Egyptian mistreated a Hebrew man. Moses try to prevent him and killed the Egyptian. Then, two Israelites were fighting and Moses again intervened. The two Israelites misunderstood Moses’ action and questioned him. Moses was afraid and fled to the land of Madian.
During that time, Moses learned how to be a shepherd, a husband, and a father. Moses was a tempered young man, and God called him to become his living presence. However, Moses was resistant. In the life of Moses, the burning bush was a conversion experience. There is fire, the voice of God, and the infinite holiness of God. Moses wants to draw closer, but a mysterious voice says: Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet for the place where you stand is holy ground. This voice communicates to Moses that he is chosen to be God’s instrument who will lead the people to freedom. Moses has entered into communication with God and cannot forget the presence of God. Even though he felt incapable and unworthy of this great mission conferred upon him, he knows that he is not alone, that God is with him.
God makes his name known to Moses. God also says: I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. In other words, we should not think that God is a being in heaven who has left men and women alone to deal with the things of earth. God is the God of heaven and the God of earth, the God who builds history, the God who walks with the patriarchs, the God who walks with our parents, and the God of our ancestor.
