Socrates is a man with the one name and he joins Bill and Ted on their amazing journey.
He was the first significant figure in a long line of significant Western philosophers. He was also Plato's teacher and friend, and Plato had a greater influence on the development of Western thinking. Plato is responsible for 90% or more of what we know about Socrates. Plato not only reported what Socrates said and did, but also used him as a spokesman for his own ideas, which presented a challenge for historians.
Socrates resided at Athens, the most significant intellectual hub of ancient Greek culture, amid a divided Greece. Athens had several wars, dictatorships, and semi-democracies; it also occasionally exhibited imperialism, was a slave-owning society, and possessed a fleet of ships that were renowned for their role in preventing Persia from annexing Greece. As a citizen in the citizen-led government of his time, Socrates took part in some Athens wars and political, judicial, and ethical disputes. He was also middle class, and the Greek Delphic Oracle regarded him as the world's wisest person because he was aware of his lack of knowledge.
He was famous for engaging people in conversation to examine the nature of our thoughts about the many important issues we all face in life. This technique, known today as the "Socratic method," uses a series of questions and answers to help us move past our thoughts and their rational boundaries. This infuriated several people since Socrates was unconcerned with how people would react emotionally when confronted with their own illogical reasoning and cared more about intellectual honesty than anything else (even his own life).
He was married, considered to be "bisexual" in our terminology, noted for being ugly, and doomed to death due to his actions and beliefs (he voluntarily killed himself rather than fleeing, as he probably could have after receiving the death sentence). He was the first "guru" in modern parlance, but he didn't become wealthy from it like Tony Robbins or others.
