a. Friction acts when a body is stationery to make the object remain static. This is called Static friction.
2. Friction also acts when a body is moving or sliding over can object to avoid the object from slipping.This is called Sliding friction.
Static friction is greater then Sliding friction because when an object is stationary it contact points get enough time to interlock with the irregularities on the surface. While when the object is already moving it's contact points do not get enough time to interlock wit the irregularities on the the surface of the other object completely. Since interlocking is less in sliding friction, therefore, it is smaller.
