Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with studying genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living organisms.
Even though heredity had been observed for millennia, Gregor Mendel, a Moravian scientist and Augustinian priest working in Brno in the 19th century, was the first to examine genetics scientifically.
Mendel studied "trait inheritance," or the transmission of traits from parents to children across time.
He observed that organisms (pea plants) acquire traits in "inheritance units" that are distinct from one another.
This term, which is still used today, is a nebulous description of what is recognised as a gene.
