There are several health career pathways that I think our government should give priority because there is a current or emerging need for these. There is currently a current need for more doctors, nurses, midwives and other allied health professionals because of the many health crisis we are facing. There is also an emerging need for more physical therapists, cardiologists and mental health professionals because of the trend in health nowadays. Hence the government should prioritize these career options over the others and if possible they be given scholarships.
Paramedics - with the institution of 911, we should likewise increase the number of paramedics who are ready to respond to emergency situations. But first, the government should model the 911 now with what is present in other countries, like Hong Kong where response time in cases of emergency is about 5 minutes. In the Philippines, so far it is at least 1 or 2 hours, by which time the patient is already dead.
Doctors - especially cardiologists, should be trained. Because of the many lifestyle-related diseases that we experience now, having highly-trained cardiologists should be a priority. These cardiologists should also know the recent trends and development in exercise and diet that has proven effective in reducing risks of heart diseases (like Keto and DASH).
Nutritionists - same with above, we are now at a stage of a diet crisis. We want everything instant and fast food style, hence, we eat a lot of carbohydrates and bad trans fat. Nutritionist must be able to help Filipinos eat a health habit rather than go down on the fast food trap.
Psychiatrists - there is now more awareness in terms of mental health and that trend should continue so that people would seek mental health issues help. To address this, there should be more psychiatrists who would be willing to work, at a cheaper rate for the needs of those who are challenged.
Physical Therapists - as stroke and other disablement happen, we need more medical professionals to help patients get to their feet (literally) through physical therapy.
