During inhalation, the diaphram contracts and flattens. The chest cavity is expected to expand downwards and outwards, this is because there’s a accumulation of negative pressure in the lungs and the air is rushes in.
During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and the volume on the chest cavity decreases. The pressure in the lungs increases and this is where the air is forced out of the body.
