Guantánamo Bay was established by the United States in January 2002 as a place for the US authorities to hold people perceived to be 'enemy combatants' in this war on terror. The first detainees were transferred to the prison camp, based in Cuba, on 11 January 2002
Guantanamo Bay, often referred to as "Gitmo", is a bay located in Guantanamo Province at the southeastern end of Cuba. It's the largest harbor on the south side of the island. The history of Guantanamo Bay goes back more than a century, to the time of the Spanish-American War.
In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, the United States seized Guantanamo Bay and established a naval base there. After the war, Spain gave the U.S. control of Cuba. In 1903, the United States and Cuba signed a lease granting the United States permission to use the land as a coaling and naval station. This lease satisfied the Platt Amendment, passed by the United States Congress, which stated that a naval base at "certain specific points agreed upon by the President of the United States" was needed to "enable the United States to maintain independence of Cuba".
The U.S. recognizes Cuba's "ultimate sovereignty" over the 45-square-mile enclave in Oriente province near the island's southeast end. In return, Cuba yielded the U.S. "complete jurisdiction and control" through a perpetual lease that can be voided only by mutual agreement. For a low rental ($3,386.25 annually), the U.S. Navy gets its best natural harbor south of Charleston, S.C., plus 19,621 acres of land, enough for a complex of 1,400 buildings and two airfields.
The detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, often associated with the term "Guantanamo Bay", were established by the U.S. to detain extraordinarily dangerous prisoners, to interrogate detainees in an optimal setting, and to prosecute detainees for war crimes. Despite controversy and numerous calls for closure, the detention facilities remain in use.
