In the story of Jack and Beanstalk, the variable was magic.
I imagine today even with all the plant genetic knowledge that the most common way to get taller bean plants is to select the seeds for planting from the taller plants. But I don’t know this to be the case. But somewhere in the plant is a gene that is the answer to how tall the plant will be, if all other growth variables things are equal.
However, if you supply all the things a bean plant needs until sunlight is the limiting factor, and even that could be manipulated, you would maximize the growth of the bean plant. In this case the variables would be nutrients, water, and the control of competition, diseases, and protection from predation and damage. I bet I am missing some critical needs, but the pay for answering these question is such that I don’t spend the time thinking about really good answers like I should.
