As per the scriptures, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi enters in sesame seed oil & water on the eve of Diwali (or Deepavali) day. That’s why there is practice of doing oil bath and lighting oil diyas especially on Diwali day.
Here is the Sanskrit verse (English Transliteration) for this:
Thaile Lakshmi Jale Ganga Deepavali thithov vaseeth
Alakshmi pariharardham thailabhyam ko vidheeyathe
Translation: On Deepavali day, Lakshmi is in Oil, any water resource will become Ganga. To remove hardships, apply oil as a practice (oil bath)
pratha snanamthu ya kuryaath sa yama lokam na pasyath
Translation: On Deepavali Chaturdashi (a day before Deepavali), Lakshmi is in Oil, if one does bath with oil and water in the early morning, the adobe of Yama (Hell) will be avoided
If someone wants to light candles for Diwali, the purpose why we celebrate the festival gets compromised.
In this day and age, every thing is accepted in the name of festivals, be it candles or crackers! And if you question it, you will be called as anti-Hindu!
