Humans don’t exist to fulfill any preconceived purpose. We’re here by the great fortune (to us) of the wondrous machinations of chemistry and biology. And since we are here, we should gratefully fashion our own purposes in life. Our purpose in life is what we make of it. The best purpose I can imagine is to do what one can to make the lives of our fellow human beings better, and to leave the world a better place than one found it because of one’s existence, choices, and actions in life.
This is what I have printed on the back of my business cards:
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
Your life purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life—the reasons you get up in the morning. Purpose can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create meaning.
