The sunspots are present on the photosphereon the Sun. The photosphere refers to a 500 km thick outer layer of the Sun where the temperature is about 6000K. As the Sun is a ball of gases, it does not possess a well defined surface and the entire photosphere is referred to as the visible surface of the Sun. Here, the sunspots appear.
