Social stratification refers to a system which categories people of a society in a hierarchy.
Three key principles of social stratification are:
(i) Social stratification is a characteristic of a society not simply a function of individual differences .
In primitive societies, there is rudimentary stratification, which increases in a modern society where social resources are unequal distributed.
(ii)Socialstratification persists over generations.
It is closely linked to family and inheritance of social resources from one generation to the next.
Eg:Caste is an ascribed identity, which is hereditary and a person's social position passes on through many generations.
(iii)Socialstratification is supported by patterns of belief orideology .
It has persisted over many generations because it is widely viewed as fair or inevitable.
People with greatest social privileges (like upper caste, usually) support it while those who suffer exploitation are most likely to challenge stratifications.
