Electrolysis is a chemical process in which certain chemical compounds called 'electrolytes' in molten or aqueous solution state decompose on passage of an electric current into different ions or charged atoms.
These ions are then discharged as different products that is neutral atoms at the electrodes - Cathode (negative electrode) and Anode (positive electrode). This above process is called electrolysis.
Applications of electrolysis are electroplating an article, purification of metals and extraction of metals.
Hope it helps !!!
