By all indications, we have the capability to communicate effectively with one another—especially with the advent of computerized devices we’ve all adopted. However, what was not factored into the equation was the “psychology” of the people using the devices currently being used to communicate. The United States is steeped in narcissism and the devices we communicate with seemed to only hermetically seal us into our fascination with ourselves. From such a place as this, we take to social media where we can “click” our humor, empathy, and whatever momentary feeling we’re having, so we can get back to checking our “likes” for what we posted.
Being in my mid sixties, age wise, and a computer technician, I have witnessed a significant change/deterioration in communication. Video cameras have been around for the past 25 years and few of us use them because we don’t want those we talk to to see our true expressions. Communication implies “relationship” on some level and it is relationship that is missing from the way we talk with/to each other. Until we re-cover relationship, we are simply exchanging data/info and not communicating.
