The new office of the Secretary of State was created in the British Government.
The powers of the Governor-General were increased and the post of the Viceroy was created in its stead. The first Viceroy of India was Lord Canning.
The Doctrine of Lapse was abolished, rights of adoption were granted and the annexed regions were returned to the Indian rulers.
