There once lived a prince in England by the name of Leonard. The prince had a bear called Fredo that other beings around him that people found her quite a curiosity. possessed such a remarkable level of intelligence and, was so delicately aware of the feelings and attitudes of other beings arround him that peaple found her quite a coriosity.

Once during a harsh winter in the country, a wretched beggar boy who was a half dead with cold happened to come across Fredo's den. The boy thought he would seek shelter from the snow there and so entered the den. Because he was almost frozen with the biting cold, he could hardly consider the danger which he was in putting himself at the mercy of the animal which occupied it.

Fredo, however, instead of doing any injury to the chici, cook him between his paws and warmed him by pressing him to his furry body until the next morning, woahe allowed the boy to depart. The next evening, the boy returned to the bear's den and once again was received with the same affection. For several days after , because the boy had no other place to stay in die kopt returning to the bear's den. It must be added that the poor boy, who had no family of his own wound great joy in the fact that the bear would regularly reserve part of his food for him.

After some time, however, when one of the servants came one day to bring the bear its supper at a time that was later than usual, he was astonished to see the animal roll his eyes in a furious manner, and indicating as if it wanted the servant to make as little noise as possible. It was then that the servant saw the sleeping child in the bear's massive arms. The bear was trying bad not to awaken the child from his sleep. In fact, so determined and caring was the bear towards the sleeping child that, although it was itself ravenous, it did not appear the least moved by the food which was placed before it.

The report of this extraordinary circumstance was soon spread at court, and in no time, reached the ears of Prince Leonard. Wanting to determine for himself the truth about the bear's curiously generous behavior, the prince, together with a few of nis servants, cecided to pass the night near the bear's den. Ensuring that the boy did not spot any of them, they soon discovered the truth of the matter when they witnessed with great astonishment that the bear never stirred as long as its guest wanted to sleep. At dawn, when the child awoke, he was very embarrassed to find that he had been discovered. Fearing that he would be punished for his rashness, the child begged for pardon. The bear, oblivious to this, caressed the beggar boy, and endeavored to persuade him to eat whac har been brought to the bear the evening before, which the child did at the request of the spectator. Having learned the whole story, Prince Leonard ordered care to be taken of the little boy. Unfortunately, the poor beggar boy who would have had a bright future with the Prince as his caregiver died a short time after.​
