There Are two forms of this substance one is black, dull, brittle and soft solid. This form conducts electricity. the other form is transparent, very hard and shiny. the melting point of the transparent form is 3730 C which element is this?
i think it's carbon because then second one is diamond which is the allotrop of carbon and the first one i think it's graphite (but graphite isnt dull)
Non-metals are brittle, soft, and electrically non-conductive. (Graphite is an exception)
There are delocalized electrons in graphite (free electrons). Because of the ability of these electrons to flow through graphite, graphite can conduct electricity by moving charges from one area to another.
The melting point of carbon (diamond) is 3730 degrees Celsius.
Diamonds are electrically non-conductive.
There are no free electrons that can move and conduct currents in diamonds due to the tetrahedral structure of covalently bound carbon atoms.
Two of the most interesting minerals are graphite and diamond. While physically they are significantly different, they are same chemically since both are made of carbon (C).
