An ion is an atom that has acquired a charge by losing or gaining electrons in order to achieve the stability of noble gas. if the atom loses electrons it will have more protons than electrons and thus have positive charge if the atom gains electrons it will have more electrons than protons that will carry a negative charge. metals tend to lose electrons until they have the same number of electrons as a noble gas "in front" of them on the periodic table. nonmetals tend to gain electrons until they have the same number of the electrons as the nobel gas "following" them on the periodic table.​
