I would also add that it's important to remember: 1. "negative b" is the same as "the opposite of b", which means to change the sign; and 2. it's important to enter b-squared as (b)-squared, so you remember to square the entire number including the negative when there is one.
These are two of the most common mistakes in using the quadratic formula that I see in tutoring.
