Incidentally I listened to the song ‘Sacrifice’ by Elton John on the radio on my way to work today and as usual it triggered a chain of thoughts on what sacrifice really is.
Incidentally I listened to the song ‘Sacrifice’ by Elton John on the radio on my way to work today and as usual it triggered a chain of thoughts on what sacrifice really is.My thoughts moved from the ultimate sacrifice that anyone can ever make, which is giving up one’s life willingly to save another person’s life, to the painful and less painful sacrifices. Then of course I thought about the sacrifice of Jesus, the Christ, which was unique and unparalleled.

Then of course I thought about the sacrifice of Jesus, the Christ, which was unique and unparalleled. But being a realist and practical person that I am, my thoughts wandered back to the everyday sacrifices which ordinary people like you and me have to make in ordinary situations. And then I found out that there are two kinds of sacrifices we make everyday depending on what the motivation is. The first kind of sacrifices are the ones we make to impress. The second kind of sacrifices are the ones we make out of pure love. The former kind of sacrifices are usually made for the purpose of receiving something back in return - recognition, praise, reward in kind, etc. The later kind of sacrifices are made expecting nothing in return.

Those are the type of sacrifices my thoughts lingered on today. We all make sacrifices almost everyday. Most of them to gain one selfish reward or the other. Then I asked myself, “what if all of us in the world are motivated only by pure love to make our daily sacrifices, how much will the world change for the better?”.
