Shams ud-Din Iltutmish (Persian: شمس الدین ایلتتمش), (died 30 April 1236, r. 1211–1236) was the third of the Mamluk kings who ruled the former Ghurid territories in northern India. He was the first Muslim sovereign to rule from Delhi, and is thus considered the effective founder of the Delhi Sultanate.
Shamsuddin Illtutmish was the second ruler of the Slave dynasty and was the son-in-law of Qutubuddin Aibak (first ruler). He had completed the construction of the Qutub Minar. He had three sons and a daughter, Razia sultan. He thought that Razia would be proven a very capable ruler than his three sons, so he crowned her the queen of the Sultanate. But unfortunately, there was massive opposition by the nobles as they had a mindset of a woman not becoming a ruler.
