We frequently misunderstand the genuine nature of fr*edom in the "country of the fr*e." Many of us associate fre*dom with personal independence — the power to make our own decisions and chart our own course in life, to do whatever we want, whenever we want. It's what I refer to as "outside fre*dom."
This, however, is not the fre*dom that Jesus promised us. When Jesus revealed Himself to be the Messiah, He stated that He came to Earth to "proclaim fre*dom" (Luke 4:18).
How do we escape the punishment and power of sin? This is accomplished through embracing Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the Cross as payment for our sin. Sin loses its power when we submit to Christ; Christ's strength takes control. Our wicked habits, ideas, and attitudes lose control when we choose to trust and follow Him. Guilt fades away, and peace of mind takes over. It takes time for good habits to become the norm. That is liberty - actual liberty!
