PERFORMANCE TASK
ACTIVITY 1
Instructions: Reread the selection on page 7 and read the excerpt from Martin Luther King's
speech " Have a Dream". Then, accomplish the graphic organizer below. (15 points)
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day
on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to
sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi,
a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed
into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I
have a dream today.

I have very Filipino features and so I am subjected to bullying in my school and racist experiences when I travel overseas. Another social issue that I have personally experienced is injustice due to my economic status in the society.

In my country, although it is not counted as racism, there is discrimination within our race. These are colorism, discrimination against an indigenous ethnicity, and economic status.
Colorism is a colonial mentality that Europeans and Americans gave to the Philippines. They instilled that European features are the best. Because of that, native looking Filipinos who have natural-looking features like brown skin, small nose, and lower stature are looked down upon. So that encompasses discrimination against indigenous Filipinos who usually possess these traits and to Filipinos who have lower economic status. The latter is because beauty is linked to wealth.
