ALBERT EINSTEIN'S CHILDHOOD

Background

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. His father, Hermann, ran a featherbed business in Ulm, a city on the Danube in southern Germany. Albert's father's featherbed business failed about a year after he was born, and the family relocated to Munich, Germany, where Hermann went to work for an electrical supply company. In the city of Munich, Einstein spent his childhood and early education.

EARLY DEVELOPMENT FOR MATH

• Although he attended school as a child, he also received Judaism and violin instruction at home. He'd taught himself geometry by the age of twelve.

• Albert Einstein was not your average child. But not in the way you might think. He was not a child prodigy who could read at the age of two and do high-level math at the age of four, but quite the opposite. Albert appeared to be having a difficult time learning to speak.
• An older Albert recalled that his parents became so concerned about his speech difficulties that they sought medical advice. Albert had the strange habit of repeating sentences to himself several times when he did start talking.

EINSTEIN'S ENTERTAINMENT

• Albert preferred to play alone as a child rather than with other boys his age. He liked making towers out of playing cards and complex structures out of blocks. He also enjoyed doing puzzles and reading math books.

• Albert's mother introduced him to one of his favorite hobbies, music. Albert wasn't sure he wanted to learn to play the violin at first. It appeared overly regimented.

• But then Albert heard Mozart, and his entire world changed. He adored Mozart, both listening to it and playing it. He developed into an excellent violinist and even performed duets with his mother.
