1. A 'Sentinel' is someone who keeps a watch, so here the owl is called a sentinel because it is a bird who used to sleep in day time and use to be awake at night. And that is why I think that owl is a sentinel but who keeps watch at night.
2. For owls, life and death relies on the ability to control noise. Owl wings and feathers have special adaptations to muffle their sound. It's stealth, not speed that makes them deadly.
3. If an animal is on the prowl, it is hunting.
4. The poet thinks that the owl is watching over the forest at night and he describes it's presence as a friendly one.
