writer of the story is Ruskin bond
The Night Train At Deoli
Ruskin Bond's The Night Train at Deoli is a short story about adolescent infatuation, which is written with sensitivity. Set against the railway station at Deoli, the story is narrated by an 18-year-old boy who regularly travels to meet his grandmother during his vacations. In this story he narrates a particular incident, while on his way to Dehradun, where he meets a beautiful cane vendor who catches his attention. Though they meet briefly only twice, the story captures the essence of two strangers meeting for a few moments on a small and lonely station.
The Two stories I read were written by Rabindranath Tagore. They are as follows:-
The Postmaster and
The Kabuliwalah.
The Postmaster:
The short story Postmaster is based on a city boy who was made the postmaster in a small village. He did not like the village at all. The village was silent and unhygienic and he had no friends to talk to. However, he had a little village girl accompany him and used to do his chores. He even taught her how to read and write. One fine morning, the postmaster resigned from the job as his request for transfer was not being accepted and he wanted to leave the village as soon as possible. The little girl was upset and expected that the postmaster who she thought to be like her elder brother would take her with him. He did not. Eventually, when he left and have already far away from the village, he thought of taking her with him but it was too late. The little girl on the other hand kept waiting for her elder brother with the hope that one day he would take her away from the miserable village.
The little girl Ratan is my favorite character from it. She was smart, innocent, diligent, and honest. She was way ahead of her time. With the right guidance, she could have done wonders but that was in vain.
The Kabuliwalah:
The short story Kabuliwalah revolves around an Afghanistani merchant who had come to India to sell his commodities. He encounters a little girl Mini who reminded him of her daughter. The little girl was not afraid of him as he used to bribe her with dry fruits. One day, he got charged with a murder case even though he was innocent. Years later when he came out of the jail, it was the day of Mini's wedding. He was astonished and emotional that she was big enough to get married. He realized that his daughter was also old enough to get married and that made him cry. The author then gave him some money so that he could return to his daughter in Afghanistan.
Mini was my favorite character in the story. She was a child when she was used to being friends with the merchant. He was huge for her yet she was never scared of him. On top of that, she used to cherish the dry fruits she was offered.
