The classification of elements is done on the basis of their 'atomic number'; as according to the modern periodic law, the physical and chemical properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers i.e., if the elements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic numbers, the elements with similar properties recur after certain fixed intervals or periods. In short, the properties of the elements, according to the Modern Periodic Law, are a periodic function of their atomic numbers.
