PROBLEM SOLVING: HEAT ENGINE EFFICIENCY Directions: Read each problem carefully. On a sheet of paper, solve the following problems by providing: (1) what is asked in the problem; (2) given values; (3) complete solution with formula; and (4) final answer. Encircle your final answer. Each item consists of 5 points.

Problem Set:

1.) During a cyclic process, a heat engine absorbs 750 J of heat from a hot reservoir, does work and ejects an amount of heat 250 J into the surroundings (cold reservoir). Calculate the efficiency of the heat engine?

2.) What is the efficiency of a gasoline engine that receives 347 J of energy from combustion and lose 194 J by heat to exhaust during one cycle?

3.) The heat engine absorbs 800 J of heat from a hot reservoir, does work and removes an amount of heat 520 J into the surroundings (cold reservoir). Calculate the efficiency of the heat engine?

4.) What is the efficiency of a diesel engine that absorbs 623 J of energy from combustion and lose 386 J by heat to exhaust during one cycle?
