The Happiness Machine is about Leo Auffman and his quest to create a machine that can make people happy. Leo was always the handyman guy, who could make anything if you asked him. Therefore, when some men jokingly asked him to make them a happiness machine, he took the challenge. Leo asked Lena, his wife, what she would think if he invented a happiness machine. She immediately thought something was wrong. If everything was all right, there would be no need for a happiness machine. This didn't phase Leo. He began thinking about what exactly would go into a happiness machine. He wondered how big happiness would be or what it would look like. Lena did not support any of this. She thought he was thinking too hard. He just needed to live life, and go with the flow. However, Leo kept working. He knew he would get a happiness machine someday.
Leo and Lena are two characters who are trying to understand happiness and the ways in which they can find it.
Leo is dedicated, smart, and someone who is determined to complete a task that he puts his mind to. However, he tends to be socially and emotionally obtuse, as he does not understand his wife's frustrations and desires and does not understand that happiness cannot be brought from machines.
Lena is a woman who is dissatisfied with her life. She believes that all she has worked for does not matter especially since her husband does not talk to her or pity her state in life. She is also hardworking and works towards ensuring that the home is clean and functional, something that Leo does not understand.
Overall, Leo's happiness is something that he can only find I his machine is successful. However, what he doesn't understand is that it is not logical to rely on a machine for happiness, there is happiness everywhere. Lena finds happiness in materialistic things but what she really needs is to experience the joy and happiness she experienced when she fell in love with Leo.
