In the winter of 1998, I went to visit Aunt Lulu. She lived in a quaint little cottage surrounded
by lychee orchards on the outskirts of Dehradun. I distinctly remember that it was a glorious
Sunday when I arrived at the cottage, and the sun was shining bright in the sky. Aunt Lulu was
dressed in a bright calico gown, and there was a bunch of fresh daisies in her hands that she
had just picked from the garden. The cat, Snowflake, had given birth to a litter of five kittens,
and the corgis, Molly and Bella, were sitting under a tree watching the kittens play with a ball
of wool.
In the afternoon, I went gathering fresh berries to make a blackberry pie. Large furry
bumblebees buzzed round the roses and lilies, and a flight of swallows could be seen sitting
on the clothesline.
In the evening, I gathered delicate flowers to make a nosegay, and helped my aunt in the
kitchen to prepare delicious bean soup and boiled potatoes. The serenity of the place and the
beauty of the landscape left a lasting impression on me, and I would wait eagerly every year
to visit the cottage and its inmates again.
