The integumentary system is the body system that both obviously and metaphorically surrounds you. You can see it if you look in the mirror, if you look anyplace on your body, and if you look around you in the outer world. It is the system that can tell us whether someone is young or elderly, what ethnicity or race they are, or if they have recently gone on vacation.

The integumentary system contains four types of glands: sudoriferous (sweat) glands, sebaceous glands, ceruminous glands, and mammary glands. These are all exocrine glands that secrete substances outside of the cells and body.
> Perspiration glands, also known as sudoriferous or sudoriparous glands, are small tubular structures of the skin that generate sweat. They derive their name from the Latin word sudor, which means "sweat."
> Sebaceous gland, a tiny oil-producing gland found in mammalian skin. Sebaceous glands are normally linked to hair follicles and secrete a fatty substance called sebum into the follicular duct and eventually to the skin's surface.
> The ceruminous glands in the epidermis of the human external auditory canal are modified apocrine glands that create cerumen, or ear wax, in collaboration with sebaceous glands.
> The mammary gland is a female gland located in the breasts that is in charge of lactation, or the production of milk. Males and females both have glandular tissue within their breasts; however, glandular tissue in females begins to grow after puberty in response to estrogen secretion.
