Ripe and Green Oranges
(Ibaloi: from Disdis)
Once upon a time, the people on earth had very little food. They were very hungry, and Kabunian felt sorry for them. "Come," he called, "I will let you pick oranges from the orange tree in my garden But you must listen well to what I say. You may get all the ripe oranges, but you must be sure to leave the green ones on the tree. Do you understand?" "Yes, yes," chorused the people eagerly. But they were in such a hurry to eat that they forgot Kabunian's warning. They climbed the orange tree and shook their branches, and all the fruit fell to the ground. Some of the people gathered green oranges, while the others scooped up the ripe ones in their arms or into their baskets. Kabunian saw what they did and he strode angrily into the midst of them. "You fools! You did not listen and you did not obey. Now, those who took the green oranges will die young and only those who took ripe oranges will live long."
