Observe establishments around your neighborhood such as carinderias, canteens and the market. Look for conditions where each of these causes of foodborne disease may be present or instances where people may be at risk for catching foodborne illnesses. Some examples are provided. CAUSE OF FOODBORNE ILLNESS DESCRIBE INSTANCES WHERE PEOPLE IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD MAY BE AT RISK EATING RAW FOOD Did you observe places where raw food was served in conditions that may be unsafe? Example: Fresh fruits exposed on a fruit stall DRINKING CONTAMINATED WATER Did you observe places where water was served in conditions that may be unsafe? Example: Pitchers of water left exposed in a restaurant EATING SPOILED ANIMAL MEAT Did you observe places where meat was being served in conditions where it might easily spoil? Example: Meat items left exposed on a counter EATING UNWASHED FOOD Did you observe places where food was not washed properly? Example: Apples or lettuce that are not washed before eaten IMPROPER COOKING OF FOOD Did you observe places where food might not have been thoroughly cooked before serving? Example: Undercooked fried chicken DIRTY UTENSILS AND FOOD EQUIPMENT Did you observe places where utensils and food equipment were being used but not washed thoroughly? Example: Carinderia that used buckets of water to rinse off utensils rather than running tap water POOR HYGIENE Did you observe establishments where servers did not practice good hygiene? Example: Servers in a canteen handling trash and not washing their hands afterwards
