Explanation:
Digestion is the process by which the food is broken down into simpler materials that the body can absorb. It is made up of parts that help in the digestion process:
1. Mouth
When we eat, the mouth contains saliva contains enzymes that break down the starch in food. It also makes the food mushy and easy to swallow. The tongue also helps in moving the food while it is being chewed by the teeth. It produces bolus, which is a ball-like mixture of food and saliva that forms in the mouth during the process of chewing
2. Esophagus
The esophagus is a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. The muscles in the walls of the esophagus move in a wavy way to slowly food through the esophagus. This movement is known as peristalsis.
3. Stomach
It is a muscular organ and is shaped like the letter J. It mixes, churns, and mashes the small balls of food from the esophagus. With the help of gastric juices, proteins are being digested. The gastric juice is composed of hydrochloric acid and pepsin. The gastric juice also helps kill bacteria in food. The partially digested food in the stomach is now known as chyme.
4. Small intestine
The last stage of digestion takes place in the small intestine. The small intestine breaks down the food mixture further so that body can absorb all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
5. Large Intestine
In the large intestine, there is no more digestion taking place. Instead, water is further absorbed leaving behind the undigested food to be eliminated by the body.
