It is normal to have feelings such as stress, anxiety, sadness and fear in times like these. The coronavirus crisis is unlike anything we’ve experienced before.
One of the scariest things is the uncertainty. Everything keeps changing: just when it feels like things might be getting better, they seem to get worse again. Human beings hate uncertainty and want guaranteed answers. Because there aren’t any – and because it sometimes feels like there’s so much different information flying around – our anxiety is often likely to be high. Again, this is the most normal thing in the world right now.
Anxiety brings with it lots of different physical feelings. This can include a racing heart, chest pain, sweatiness and shortness of breath. Again, all of these are very normal. They aren’t pleasant – but they are normal.
When our lives feel so different and uncertain, that can give rise to very understandable frustration, confusion and worry. We might notice that our mood slumps. Our minds might keep bombarding us with questions: when will things get better? Will there be a second wave? What else might go wrong?
No matter how hard we try, none of us can actually stop different thoughts and feelings from showing up. What we can do, though, is learn ways of coping with them and responding differently to them.
