There can be many different scenarios of height difference(like between a pine tree and a Maple tree or within Pine trees of one forest to pine trees of other etc.).But all have some common reasons like difference in genes , environmental conditions .
But these are not equal to human height comparison . Because humans are one single species of a single genera . If one compares within a specific tree population like height of a Coastal Redwood with another one then this comparison is equal altough height difference reasons maybe not same
It’s probably because they are competing for sunlight.
Trees, like all plants, need to do photosynthesis every day of their growing season in order to keep living, and they tend to like to maximize that by getting as much light as they can handle.
When there are other plants (other trees) in the way of that light, they will try to grow taller than the others plants so that they can have better access to that sunlight.
