On January 1st, a system glitch occurred at the Air Control Tower (ATC) of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), causing a shutdown. This resulted in the cancellation of flights and left many passengers stranded, including Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). However, according to Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) Executive Director Carmelo Arcilla, no OFWs lost their jobs as a result of the incident
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) coordinated efforts to help stranded passengers, including OFWs. They deployed roving nurses and midwives to provide medical attention and supplies, as well as ambulances. The OWWA also helped 7,025 OFWs by providing food to 859 individuals, accommodation assistance to 174 individuals, and transportation assistance to 183 individuals
The shutdown affected around 77,000 passengers and resulted in the cancellation of around 400 international and domestic flights. Despite the inconvenience caused by the shutdown, it is heartening to see that efforts were made to assist those affected and that no OFWs lost their jobs as a result.
